LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

DYSLEXIA

Dyslexia is a reading disorder characterised by low reading accuracy, speed, and/or comprehension. Individuals with dyslexia frequently struggle with language processing tasks, including identifying or creating rhyming words, learning new vocabulary, spelling, and distinguishing between similar letters (e.g., b and d) or words (e.g., saw and was). The percentage of students with dyslexia in Singapore falls within the international prevalence range of 3% to 10%.

Dyslexia Symptoms

Dyslexia usually becomes apparent from age 6 to 9. Children with dyslexia can be intelligent and smart, however, they do not perform well in school.

Symptoms of dyslexia includes the following:

  • Difficulty reading (as compared to same age peers)
  • Difficulty remembering definitions and meanings, and pronunciation of words read/learnt
  • Poor spelling and comprehension, poor essay writing
  • Headaches and/or dizziness while reading
  • Perform well when quizzed orally but not in written assessments
  • Difficulty completing homework or learning new topics
  • Some have symptoms of attention deficit or distractibility (ADHD comorbidity)
FINDING THE CAUSES
Brain factors

Spectrum Learning, with nearly 30 years of experience in qEEG profiles, has identified a variety of neurological causes for dyslexia, which gives rise to its various subtypes. Inactivity in other parts of the brain associated with language functions has also been found to be a key contributing factor to dyslexia symptoms. qEEG brain mapping provides important information about how one is utilising his/her brain while on a language task. With this information, we can design tailored brain exercises for the individual as part of our programme for dyslexia treatment in Singapore.

Many conditions can cause symptoms of dyslexia. Through our qEEG brain mapping, we find that some children might have been misdiagnosed. Regardless of whether they are called dyslexic or not, using qEEG, we can find out which brain areas are causing the reading or comprehension problems. With this information, we can design a specific dyslexia treatment programme to target the problematic areas. This leads to high success in intervention.

Neurofeedback Therapy for Dyslexia in Singapore

With neurofeedback therapy, we can target and exercise specific brain regions linked to reading and language, like Wernicke’s area. This brain training helps individuals learn to regulate neural activity in these areas, enabling them to activate reading-related regions at will. Our experienced therapists at Spectrum Learning will carry out the necessary assessments and evaluations to come up with the best-suited dyslexia treatment programme for your child.

This leads to:

  • Improved reading – silent and orally
  • Improved comprehension and understanding
  • Improved concentration
  • Improved  writing with more elaboration
  • Improved  learning

Biological factors

Exposure to pollution and nutritional imbalance can affect brain function, learning and behaviour. Research is now beginning to recognise these factors. The following nutritional profile has been found to correlate with dyslexia and/or learning difficulties:

  • Elevated Copper level
  • Iron deficiency
  • Imbalanced Zinc/Copper ratio
  • Accumulation of heavy metals such as Mercury
  • Exposure to other toxins
  • Excessive acidity

Tests can be done to identify these problems and supplements and dietary adjustments could be introduced to address these issues.
