Autism vs Autistic Spectrum Disorder


Autism is a specific disorder in Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). PDD refers to a group of disorders which includes the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD).


Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a subgroup of disorders which includes autism disorder, Apserger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS).


Some call Autism disorder as Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is a general term for a group of complex disorders of brain development, which includes Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS).


Symptoms and Diagnosis of Autism


The ASD group of disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.


Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age.


Autism is diagnosed based on behavioral symptoms. The diagnostic criteria for Asperger Syndrome according to the DSM IV:


Symptoms for autism is a total of six or more symptoms items from lists (1), (2), and (3), with at least two from (1) and one from (2) and (3).
